TWO beaches were cleaned on Sunday with over 300 pounds of waste being collected.

The beach cleaning was spearheaded by the Trinidad & Tobago National Petroleum Marketing Company Limited (NP) as part of its corporate social responsibility strategy.

The Blanchisseuse Beach and Sandy Point Beach in Tobago were cleaned simultaneously in observance of the United Nations Environment Programme’s (UNEP) 2022 theme of “Only One Earth,” for World Environment Day.

NP in a press release on Monday stated that it embraced the opportunity to raise awareness about the need for urgent global action to celebrate, protect and restore the planet.

Member for Parliament for Arima and Minister of Planning and Development Pennelope Beckles and councillor for Blanchisseuse/Santa Rosa Roger Moore assisted NP’s employees and their families in the clean-up exercises.

Beckles said, “The responsibility for a clean environment lies not with NP, the minister or the councillor but with every citizen of Trinidad and Tobago”.

NP said that volunteers combed the beaches and nearby waterways for marine debris including plastics, glass bottles, cans and general waste. Each item retrieved was recorded, and results were collated at the end of the clean-up activity.

A total of 257 pounds of waste was collected at the Blanchisseuse Beach with Tobago retrieving 100 pounds of waste at the Sandy Point Beach.

NP also thanked all involved and affirmed its commitment to ensuring “minimal impact” on the environment.
