Argentina are entering this match with an undefeated 31-game streak and it may be the chance for Lionel Messi and Angel De Maria to add another trophy after such a long wait for a Copa title. The last time they met in 2018 Argentina were the 2-0 victors. Italy have not had a win over Argentina since the 1978 World Cup.
This is a remodelled Argentine side that has reduced the flair to adopt a more rugged defensive style that has brought with it a long undefeated streak along with a Copa title. Italy have shown a lot more attacking flair recently and are strong in defence. They were unlucky to miss out on the World Cup and will want to show that they are still one of the best in the world.
This is the third such game in this tournament. In 1985, the first was played between France and Uruguay with France winning 2-0. In 1993, Argentina defeated Denmark on penalties to take the game. The recent statements of UEFA seem to indicate that this will be a regular meeting.
This match is of great interest to me because it pits my two favourite teams against each other. So, it will be interesting to watch – but I will go with Argentina for the win.
Italy are an excellent side and the return to Wembley may be a good omen and somewhat wash the pain of the World Cup failure away – just a little bit. It will do wonders to the dejected Italian players who need a boost for their fans.
Do not be mistaken, in no way will this game replace World Cup qualification for either team and I am sure Italy will choose not to be defeated here as they are a world-class side.
This should be an interesting game and it will be worth the watch as the best of Europe engages the best of South America. It will be entertaining as both teams seek to make a powerful statement. Argentina will want to send a message to all the other teams that they are contenders and will fight for the World Cup. Italy desperately wants to show that they are a great side and Euro 2020 was not a lucky win for this side.
