POLICE and fire officers were at the scene of a fire at the office of the Solid Waste Management Company Ltd (SWMCOL) on Independence Square, Port of Spain after it caught fire on Tuesday night.
The fire began after maintenance works from the Trinidad & Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) which were conducted earlier.
Investigators suspect the fire began when electrical components malfunctioned causing a fire at the back of the building.
AZPNews.com was told that the fire occurred around 10 pm and stemmed from an electrical problem earlier that day.
At present no one is allowed in the building until investigations are completed.
SWMCOL manages the landfills at Beetham, Port of Spain, at Guanapo, Arima and Forres Park, Claxton Bay which were converted from being open-burning dumps.
