TRINIDAD and Tobago currently ranks 30th out of 190 countries in its Covid-19 death mortality rate, says Health Minister Terrence Deyalsingh.
T&T’s Covid-19 case fatality ratio (CFR) stands at three.
He was asked about the reasons for the “high mortality figures” by Member of Parliament for Naparima Rodney Charles.
Deyalsingh on Friday said the term “high” was relative.
On Thursday, the total Covid-19 related death figure was 3,134.
Deyalsingh said, “We are currently number 30 out of 190 countries so there are 160 countries below us. Other countries that are more resourced are 25, higher than us, 19, 31, higher than us.
“What we do is calculate our case fatality ratio which is the number of deaths over the number of positive cases. In phase one where we had eight deaths our CFR was 6.2. That later dropped to one because at 6.2, it was eight deaths out of a very small number of positive cases. At this point in time, in the highest peak of our pandemic, our case fatality ratio is around three. The global average is between two and three.”
The minister also said Government will continue to attempt to reduce the death rate by looking at hospital care versus home care, reliance on public health measures, persons getting vaccinated and by combatting misinformation.
