ONE car thief was killed by police and the other escaped as the drama was captured on video by motorists along the Solomon Hochoy Highway on Monday afternoon.
Police officers attached to the Central Division Gang Unit were on enquiries at the surveillance point near the Couva Hospital and had cause to intervene. The vehicle was intercepted and a foot chase ensued around 3.45 pm during peak traffic hours.
Near the Indian Trail flyover, the suspects exited the vehicle and shot at the police officers. The officers returned fire and struck one who was rushed to the Couva Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival and is yet to be identified. The search is on for the other suspect.
Video footage of the incident was filmed by persons in their vehicles and shared widely on social media.
The incident followed another highway drama early on Monday morning when police officers had again to intervene following protests by Beetham residents.
