THE Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP) has taken 14 out of the 15 seats in the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) elections on Monday.
This is according to the preliminary results of the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) issued on Tuesday.
And the PDP has also asked for a recount in the only electoral district it lost to the People’s National Movement (PNM) in Darrel Spring/Whim. The results showed that the PNM’s Kelvon Morris beat PDP’s Abby Taylor.
The PNM has also requested a recount for Buccoo/Mt Pleasant where its candidate Chief Secretary Ancil Dennis is reported to have lost to the PDP’s Sonny Craig.
The EBC stated that there was a 57% voter turnout with 29,273 electors casting their votes out of 51,383.
Due to Covid-19, 800 Tobagonians in quarantine were not allowed to vote.
The breakdown of votes received by the political parties is as follows:
- The Progressive Democratic Patriots – 16,932
- The People’s National Movement – 11,943
- The Innovative Democratic Alliance – 295
- The Class Action Reform Movement – 0
- The Unity of the People – 6
The EBC stated that 45 candidates, representing five political parties contested the elections, where for the first time, there were fifteen electoral districts in a THA election.
