Officials made reference to its Rainfall and Temperature Outlook Update for the months of October to December which showed wetter than usual conditions are expected for October to December with rainfall totals likely to be above normal.

TTMS said, “October is likely to be the wettest month of the period when the ITCZ is likely to dominate.  However, unusually wet conditions are likely for October with the likelihood for above-normal rainfall higher in October than for November and December.”

The Met Office warned that October is likely to be the wettest month of the period when the ITCZ is likely to dominate, with very wet days from October 8-14 and October 15-21.

It stated, “Much of the country shows a greater than 50% chance for OND rainfall totals above 700 mm.

“October and November are usually the two most flood-prone months in Trinidad and Tobago.  Unsettled conditions during October are likely to produce sufficient heavy rainfall days to maintain elevated concerns for flooding and landslides during the month.”

Officials stated the phase of the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a key factor that is likely to favorably enhance local rainfall totals during the second and third weeks of October.

TTMS advised of the possibility of one or two hot days (maximum temperatures ≥34°C) during early October.

However, as a result, there may be an increased chance of rainfall-induced landslides, as well as concerns for flooding in flood-prone areas.

The Met Office also forecasted “January to March 2022 is  likely to have below-normal rainfall totals, with minimum and maximum temperatures likely to be ‘warmer than average’, with cities and urban areas likely to get the most intense heat.”

Getting prepared

The Met Office has advised that people living in flood risk areas should take every action now to strengthen flood preparedness and response plans, while paying greater attention to the daily weather forecasts.

In addition, they should also maintain emergency supplies to shelter in place for seven days and a grab and go-bag with clothes, medicines and essentials and have these on standby.

Persons are also asked to develop an evacuation plan that outlines the safety of family members and pets and update all contact information for the local disaster officials and other emergency services.
