PREGNANT women who take the Covid-19 Pfizer vaccine are protecting their unborn babies.

This according to Director of Women’s Health Dr Adesh Sirjusingh who spoke at Monday’s Ministry of Health press briefing.

“The anti-bodies against the Covid-19 virus pass to the body and gives some level of protection,” he stated.

Dr Sirjusingh said, “It’s about protecting the unborn child. When the mother takes the vaccine itself it is actually excreted from the body. The body gets rid of it very quickly but the immune response continues and you make anti-bodies.”

He said, “The vaccine cannot past across the placenta to the body. That is the first level of safety we know about this vaccine. So when that baby is born remember that young babies cannot be vaccinated but they can get Covid-19. So a mother that takes the vaccine is actually protecting her unborn child. You are doing something tremendously important for that child.”

Dr Sirjusingh said, “In addition you keep breast feeding which is the best food for your baby. Of course the anti-bodies will continue to go from mom to baby in the breast milk and give added protection.”

Vaccination for pregnant women with the Pfizer vaccine begins on Wednesday at the sites already designated for persons 12 to 18 years old.
