FORMER Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi flew to Paris on Tuesday to join the Paris Saint-Germain.
Following the end of his 21-year relationship with the Barcelona football club on June 30 and heartfelt send-off on Sunday, Messsi, 34, moved to Paris to finalise his contract with PSG.
Messi said, “At the moment nothing is confirmed, I received a lot of calls after the Barcelona statement. We’re currently talking about it.”
Messi was previously the top scorer for Barcelona winning Ballon d’Or a record of six times and the captain of the Argentinian football team with 672 goals from 778 matches. He has also won La Liga ten times. He made his professional debut in 2003.
His father Jorge Messi was asked by reporters at Barcelona’s El Prat airport if his son will sign with PSG and whose fault was it for Messi’s departure. Jorge said, “Yes,” and told reporters to, “find out at the club.”
Messi was also questioned by reporters on joining a rival team and he replied, “There is no doubt that I will go to a team that will compete with Barca. I didn’t want to leave but I have to. And I want to keep winning. That’s my mentality. I want to win.”
He has since completed his medical check-up on Tuesday and agreed to sign a two-year contract with PSG and will be wearing the No 30 shirt which was his first number at Barcelona. There is also the possibility of the contract being extended for a third year.
