CARIBBEAN Airlines (CAL) is in the process of retrenching 450 workers.

This consists of 25% of the airline’s workforce across the board.

In answering media related questions in a statement circulated on Monday, CAL stated that the global economic crisis brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic left the airline with few options in order to remain sustainable.

The measure will not affect flights, cargo operations or service quality, CAL stated.

CAL stated, “In order to survive in the short to medium term, the company has to decrease the aircraft fleet to match reduced passenger demand among other initiatives. The decrease in the aircraft fleet will result in surplus labour. Surplus labour is the reason  for the proposed retrenchment exercise.”

The airline stated, “ Even with the pending re-opening of the borders of Trinidad and Tobago, travel demand is not expected to be the same as pre-Covid and current passenger demand is not going to recover sufficiently to support the existing company structure.”

Support will be in place for retrenched persons needing assistance, the airline added.
