POLICE seize 500 rounds of ammunition in abandoned structure in Arima.

A Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) release on Friday stated that the ammo was seized during an Operation Strike Back 3 exercise conducted between 12 noon and 5pm on Thursday  in Arima.

Officers went to an abandoned concrete structure at Trainline Road, off Pinto Road, Arima, where a knapsack which contained a large quantity of ammunition was found and seized.

A check revealed that the bag contained 500 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.

Officers then went to a shop located at the corner of Eastern Drive and Calvary Hill, Arima, where a search was conducted.

Two men were arrested for being in possession of marijuana, which when weighed amounted to 107 grammes.

In another incident at Trainline Road, officers observed a known firearm offender, who on seeing the approaching police vehicles began to run.

PC Brewster and other officers observed that the man had an object in his right hand. As the man ran away the object fell from his right hand, however, the man was able to escape.

Police checked the area where the object fell and PC Brewster retrieved what appeared to be an extended magazine containing 22 rounds of nine-millimetre ammunition.

A warrant is to be issued for the man’s arrest.

Additionally, seven persons were arrested for breaching the Public Health Regulations, by having a gathering exceeding five in number, along Hollis Avenue, Arima.

The exercise was coordinated by ACP Andy Belfon, Snr Supt Renzey Ramdeen, ASP Coggins, Insp Pitt and supervised by Sgt Leopold along with Cpls Boyce, Sookram and officers of the NDTF Area East, Arima Ops Team and Canine Unit personnel.
