FIVE more Trinidad and Tobago nationals have tested positive for the Brazilian variant (P1) of the Covid-19 virus. This brings to nine, the number of people with this variant in the country.
A release from the Ministry of Health on Monday stated that the variants were detected in three people from St George Central and two from St George West.
It stated, “All contact tracing and isolation procedures are in progress, and are being managed by the relevant County Medical Officer of Health with the aim of reducing the spread of this Variant of Concern.
“This brings the total local number of confirmed Covid-19 positive samples of the P1 variant to nine (9).
“It is important to note that the cases have no epidemiological link to each other and were identified in varying geographical locations in T&T.
At the virtual media conference of the Ministry of Health on Monday Epidemiologist Dr Avery Hinds said not all positive Covid-19 cases can be tested for the presence of the P1 due to the lack of capacity at the University of the West Indies where genetic sequencing was done.
