SPEAKER of the House of Representatives Brigid Annisette-George has not yet responded to the Opposition’s letter questioning the safety health protocols in Parliament.
This is according to the United National Congress (UNC) who is also claiming that over the weekend “PNM big shot financiers allegedly held a wedding party with over 250 guests.”
And they are requesting the names of the 35 persons who have been quarantined due to contact with Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley who remains Covid-19 positive.
The UNC stated, “We are in an information blackout.”
In a media release on Friday, the UNC stated, “While some have foolishly blamed the Opposition for not doing the ‘people’s business’ in Parliament, they have neglected the fact that Speaker has not done her business by simply responding to the Opposition’s urgent letter.
“This is contempt of the highest order. Does the Speaker feel no need to respond to the Parliamentary Opposition? The Opposition has been forced to absent itself from Parliament on three occasions so far, holding media briefings, raising concerns, and yet there has not been even an acknowledgement from the Speaker of the House?”
Opposition Chief Whip David Lee wrote to Annisette-George on April 9 asking about the safety protocols for that day’s sitting of the House of Representatives to protect members of Parliament and staff following the disclosure of Dr Rowley testing positive for Covid-19. The Opposition has since neither attended the Senate nor the House of Representatives.
The party added that the country was paying a terrible price for Dr Rowley’s “Covid malpractice” since after the Prime Minister contracted the virus, the country was facing further lockdown.
