THE Anti-Gang Bill was passed in the Senate on Tuesday.

It was passed with 24 senators voting in support of the Bill, none against and six Opposition members abstained.

It is now expected to go to the House of Representatives for debate.

The controversial bill, supported by Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith did not sit well with the Opposition who repeatedly called for amendments.

The version which was passed on Tuesday required a simple minority and certain controversial aspects rejected by the Opposition United National Congress (UNC) were removed.

Last year November, the Bill was defeated after lack of necessary support from the UNC, a decision the National Security Ministry stated would have adverse effects in the country’s fight against crime.

It was also a popular topic at the UNC virtual Monday night meetings especially in the lead-up to the UNC’s internal elections with UNC’s political leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar clearly stating that as long as the Government did not officially proclaim and implement the procurement legislation, it will get no support from the Opposition members in passing certain laws.

The law came to an end in November, having been passed in 2018 with a sunset clause. The Government was seeking to have the law period extended for another 30-month period.
