PRIME Minister Dr Keith Rowley is giving the assurance that soon, women in Trinidad and Tobago will be armed with non-lethal weapons.

He made the comment in Parliament on Friday in answering questions asked by the Opposition.

Dr Rowley was asked by Member of Parliament  for Oropouche East Dr Roodal Moonilal about a status update on legislation regarding non-lethal weapons including pepper spray.

He said that the relevant advice was sought and it would be allowed with the use of special permits.

Dr Rowley said, “This matter has been brought before the Cabinet it has found favour and has been sent to F and GP (Finance and General Purposes Committee) to finalise  the nature of the permitting. That is to be done and very soon  that should be out of the Cabinet available for operationalisation.”

When further questioned by Dr Moonilal about the time frame in which women will be able to have it in their hands, Dr Rowley replied, “I give the assurance that in very short order, in this Government, approval would be granted  and the women will have it in their hands.”

There has been an intensified call for the legislation with Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar saying that it will be supported once brought to the Parliament.
