$80,000 Bail for Beating Woman with Bat

A 42-year-old St James man who allegedly beat a woman with a cricket bat has been granted bail in the sum of $80,000.

Dusty Joseph, a taxi driver, got the bail by a Justice of Peace Stephen Young on Wednesday after he was charged with malicious damage and assault by beating against a woman.

He is scheduled to appear before a Port of Spain Magistrate on February 28, 2023.

Reports say the 18-year-old victim was with a friend at the corner of Henry Street and Independence Square, Port of Spain, on January 19, 2023, when she got into a verbal altercation with a man.

It is being alleged that during the incident, the man took out a cricket bat and hit her to the face and lower back.

The woman’s cellular phone was also damaged during the altercation, police said.

Video footage of the incident went viral on social media and was brought to the attention of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, a release stated on Thursday.

The victim subsequently made a report of the incident to the police.

An intelligence-led exercise was spearheaded by ACP Hazel, Snr Supt Alexander and Supts Ramsook and Daly and supervised by Inspector Yearwood and Sgt Alexander, all of the Port of Spain Division on Tuesday, and resulted in the arrest of a male suspect, the TTPS release stated.

Joseph was charged by PC Felix of the Central Police Station on Wednesday.
