A 24-year-old Penal salesman who falsely reported that he was kidnapped because he gambled away his day’s sales is fined $600.

Shane Ramjattan, of Julien Branch Trace, Rochard Road, appeared on Tuesday before Senior Magistrate Rae Roopchand in the Rio Claro Magistrates’ Court.

He was charged with wasteful employment of police time by making a false report to constable Majid Khan that he was kidnapped on January 15 at Barrackpore and kept in a forested area against his will.

Ramjattan apologised and was given seven days to pay his fine or serve two months in jail.

He was reported missing to the Penal Police Station by his family on January 16.

Two days later, he visited the Barrackpore Police Station and told officers there, he had been kidnapped from the Penal district on January 15. He reported he was beaten, taken to a forested area and forced to clean weapons and pack drugs by his kidnappers before being released.

Officers found several irregularities in his report and he was charged.
