PRIME Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar praises the role East Indians have played in shaping Trinidad and Tobago’s society.
In her Indian Arrival Day Message on Friday, Persad-Bissessar called for continued unity in diversity.
She said, “Today, we honour the legacy and achievements of our East Indian foreparents, proud in the knowledge that their contributions, like those of the many other ethnic groups who also call Trinidad and Tobago home, have carved for us a clear path to equality and progress.”
The Office of the Prime Minister also acknowledged the historic voyage of the Fatel Razack in 1845. It said, “On this Indian Arrival Day, we honour the courage and sacrifice of those who came aboard the Fatel Razack… Let us remember that no matter our background, we are all driven by one destiny.”
The message was accompanied by a symbolic image of a ship and the caption, “Happy Indian Arrival Day to Everybody.”
With warm greetings to the Indian community, the People’s National Movement (PNM) also took to Facebook posting “Together, We Celebrate 180 Years of Shared History and Success.”
Each message comes as Trinidad and Tobago celebrates 180 years since the arrival of the first indentured labourers from India, a milestone in the nation’s shared history of resilience and cultural integration.
