THE official preliminary results of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) election are out.
On Tuesday, the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC) advised that the preliminary tabulation and verification of results have been completed in accordance with established electoral procedures.
Of the total registered electorate of 53,239 voters across 15 electoral districts in Tobago, voter turnout was recorded at approximately 50.69 per cent on Monday.
The distribution of votes received by the political parties is as follows:
- IDA – 181;
- PNM – 10,456;
- TPP – 16,240; and
- UTP – 8
The total valid votes were 26,885, and the total rejected ballots were 104, the EBC disclosed.
Based on the preliminary count, the Tobago People’s Party (TPP) led by THA Chief Secretary Farley Augustine has won all 15 electoral districts.
The People’s National Movement (PNM) formally requested recounts in the following electoral districts:
1. Darrel Spring/Whim;
2. Scarborough/Mt. Grace.
The requested recounts are scheduled to commence at 3 pm on Tuesday.
Unity of the People (UTP) led by Nickocy Phillips and Innovative Democratic Alliance (IDA), led by Dr Denise Tsoiafatt-Angus did not secure any seat.
The Commission emphasised that the results were preliminary and remained provisional, pending the completion of the recounts and the final validation process.
On Monday night, Augustine declared victory after PNM Tobago Council leader, Ancil Dennis, conceded defeat.
This is a second blow to the PNM having lost its only seat in the THA and following the general election held last year April.
Both Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar and Opposition Leader Pennelope Beckles issued congratulations to the TPP with Beckles retaining her party remained strong.
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) in a media release had stated upon the conclusion of voting at 6 pm on Monday, the TTPS was satisfied that the electoral process was conducted in a safe, calm and orderly manner.
The TTPS thanked the public for their cooperation and TTPS officers for their professionalism, vigilance, and dedication in maintaining a secure voting environment.
The release stated, “As the nation transitions into the post-election period, the public is encouraged to continue to act responsibly, remain respectful of others, and observe the law, including during any celebrations.”
