THERE are three times more Covid-19 critically ill people than recovering patients within the parallel healthcare system.
This according to Principal Medical Officer Dr Maryam Abdool-Richards at a press conference on Saturday at the Diplomatic Centre in St Ann’s.
She said the number of patients that were critically ill over recovering patients emphasised the severity of the Covid-19 virus.
Dr Abdool-Richards said, “It would indicate that over the last week we had more ill patients as compared to the last week resulting in them being kept in hospitals for a longer period and being discharged later.”
The PMO said that the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) occupancy was at 72% and the High Dependency Unit at 41%.
She said as of 8am on Saturday, there were 385 people within the parallel healthcare system with 296 in the nine hospitals and 89 across the seven stepdown facilities.
Dr Abdool-Richards also stated that there has been an overall decline in the occupancy levels within the Parallel Health Care Facilities with Trinidad with four out of ten beds currently occupied in Trinidad and three out of ten beds occupied in Tobago.
While the Augustus Long Hospital has been consistently over the critical threshold of occupancy, she noted that the percentage of occupancy levels, as well as new admissions have been on the decline over the last three weeks.
