3 More People with Brazilian Variant in T&T

THE Brazilian variant (P1) of the Covid-19 virus has been detected in three more people in Trinidad and Tobago.

The variant was detected in a person in east Trinidad on Monday.

A release from the Ministry of Health on Friday stated that the latest three cases were detected in Covid-19 positive samples detected on Thursday night.

They were detected by the team at the University of the West Indies that conducts genetic sequencing on Covid-19 positive samples, the ministry stated.

It noted that of the three additional cases, two were T&T nationals and one a non-national.

One of the samples came from a person under 18 years.

The release stated, “It is important to note that the cases have not been geographically or epidemiologically linked to the previously identified P1 variant case or to each other.”

The variants were detected in cases from the Caroni, Victoria and St George West counties, the ministry stated.

The release added, “All contact tracing and isolation procedures are in progress and being managed by the relevant County Medical Officer of Health, with the aim of containing these Variants of Concern.”
