AT least 21 Venezuelans have died attempting to reach Trinidad and Tobago over the weekend when the boat they were in capsized.
And there are fears that more bodies will be found.
According to the spokesperson for United Nations, High Commissioner for Human Rights Marta Hurtado, this could be one of the biggest single losses of life involving Venezuelan refugees and migrants trying to cross the sea to Trinidad and Tobago.
Hurtado said in a statement on Tuesday, “According to the Venezuelan authorities, 21 bodies were found over the weekend in the waters off the town of Güiria in the Venezuelan state of Sucre.
“So far, the authorities have identified 19 victims, among them four children. According to information we have received, the boat in question is said to have left Güiria en route to Trinidad and Tobago on December 6.”
In Güiria, hundreds held a candlelight vigil for those who lost their lives. Venezuelan authorities have since arrested the boat owner who was conducting the transportation to Trinidad.
She again echoed calls by various organisations to have urgent efforts to stop smugglers and human traffickers sending refugees and migrants on dangerous sea journeys.
“We also urge the Venezuelan and Trinidad and Tobago authorities to coordinate and cooperate to protect the lives and safety of migrants and refugees, including by operating effective search and rescue at sea and by promptly, effectively, thoroughly, and transparently investigating this tragic incident. It is also extremely important for the two Governments to coordinate and cooperate regarding safe migration routes,” Hurtado added.
Last month, the UN raised concerns over the deportation of 25 Venezuelans, among them 16 children, from Trinidad and Tobago as a legal application was being lodged against their removal. The group spent a couple of days at sea before ending up back in T&T.
Hurtado also called for suspension of all forced returns amid the Covid-19 pandemic to safeguard the health of migrants and communities and encouraged governments to instead provide safe and legal pathways for migrants to regularise their status and avoid the risk of deportation.
“Pathways for admission and stay should be consistent with international human rights law and humanitarian considerations and include access to due process and procedural safeguards,” she said.
21 Cuerpos Recuperados De Las Aguas De Güiria

Al menos 21 Venezolanos han muerto intentando llegar a Trinidad y Tobago durante el fin de semana cuando el barco en el que se encontraban se volcó.
Y se teme que se encuentren más cadáveres.
Según la portavoz de las Naciones Unidas, la Alta Comisionada para los Derechos Humanos Marta Hurtado, esta podría ser una de las mayores pérdidas de vidas entre refugiados y migrantes Venezolanos que intentan cruzar el mar hacia Trinidad y Tobago.
Hurtado dijo en un comunicado el Martes, “Según las autoridades Venezolanas, durante el fin de semana fueron encontrados 21 cuerpos en las aguas frente a la localidad de Güiria en el Estado Venezolano de Sucre.”
“Hasta el momento, las autoridades han identificado a 19 víctimas, entre ellas cuatro niños. Según la información que hemos recibido, se dice que el barco en cuestión salió de Güiria en ruta a Trinidad y Tobago el 6 de diciembre ”.
En Güiria, cientos realizaron una vigilia con velas por aquellos que perdieron la vida.
Desde entonces, las autoridades venezolanas arrestaron al propietario del barco que realizaba el transporte a Trinidad.
Nuevamente Ella hizo eco de los llamamientos de varias organizaciones para que se realicen esfuerzos urgentes para detener a los traficantes de personas y a personas que envían refugiados y migrantes en peligrosos viajes por mar.
“También instamos a las autoridades venezolanas y de Trinidad y Tobago a que se coordinen y cooperen para proteger la vida y la seguridad de los migrantes y refugiados, incluso mediante operaciones de búsqueda y rescate efectivas en el mar e investigando de manera rápida, efectiva, exhaustiva y transparente este trágico incidente. También es sumamente importante que los dos Gobiernos se coordinen y cooperen con respecto a rutas migratorias seguras ”, agregó Hurtado.
El mes pasado, la ONU expresó su preocupación por la deportación de 25 venezolanos, entre ellos 16 niños, de Trinidad y Tobago mientras se presentaba una demanda legal contra su expulsión. El grupo pasó un par de días en el mar antes de regresar a T&T.
Hurtado también pidió la suspensión de todos los retornos forzosos en medio de la pandemia de Covid-19 para salvaguardar la salud de los migrantes y las comunidades y alentó a los gobiernos a que en su lugar proporcionen vías seguras y legales para que los migrantes regularicen su estado y eviten el riesgo de deportación.
“Las vías de admisión y estadía deben ser coherentes con el derecho internacional de los derechos humanos y las consideraciones humanitarias e incluir el acceso al debido proceso y las garantías procesales”, dijo.
