A load-shedding event occurred at 6.55 am on Friday due to issues with multiple generator units at Independent Power Producers (IPPs) supplying electricity to the Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC).
The disruption resulted in the automatic shedding of power to 20% of T&TEC’s customers in Trinidad, with affected individuals experiencing an average outage of 35 minutes.
Power was fully restored by 7.41 am a release by T&TEC stated on Friday.
T&TEC explained that the Underfrequency Scheme, designed to minimise local impact during sudden generation losses, was activated to match available capacity. This led to outages in various locations across Trinidad, highlighting the widespread effect of the incident.
The Commission has instructed the IPPs to restart their generators and bring additional machines online as needed. They also require a report from the IPPs to be submitted as soon as possible.
There reports of outages along the East-West corridor Cunupia, Freeport, Couva, Charlieville, Barrackpore and Penal.
A number of traffic lights at Pasea, Macoya and on the Eastern Main Road in Tunapuna were not functioning. Police officers and traffic wardens were spotted directing vehicles.
