TWO high/medium energy mobile X-ray scanners arrived in Trinidad on Sunday
This marks a significant step in bolstering national security and improving customs efficiency, a release by the Ministry of Finance stated on Tuesday.
As part of a January 2024 contract with Canadian-based Sectus Technologies, four scanners were purchased for US$12 million. Built in Paris, these state-of-the-art scanners will be used to inspect imports and exports, helping to detect contraband such as weapons.
The scanners enable operators to view the contents of loaded trucks, containers, and vehicles without the need for unloading.
This technology not only enhances security but also increases inspection efficiency by reducing manual checks, the release stated.
The first two scanners will undergo a two to three week commissioning period, including site acceptance testing and training, before being deployed at the Port of Port of Spain and the Port of Point Lisas. The remaining two scanners are expected to arrive by November 24, 2024.
This initiative includes maintenance and technician training for Customs and Excise personnel, ensuring optimal operation and sustained security improvements.
