ONLY about 1% of the population of Trinidad and Tobago received curfew passes during the State of Emergency (SoE) to help curb the spread of Covid-19.

Police Commissioner Gary Griffith said he received 8,300 letters with 380,000 names requesting passes to provide essential services during the curfew period of 9pm to 5am.

He said he went through all the letters and approved about 13,000 people.

“That’s just about one percent of the population needed to keep the country going whilst we slept. And that would have been persons involved primarily in the health sector, port services, energy, law enforcement,” Griffith said at the press conference of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) on Tuesday.

He said for emergency cases there was the hotline centre.

Griffith said it could be utilised for a medical emergency or for an emergency to provide an essential service.

The number to call is 480-2000 and now 12 more lines have been added to a landline 612-3876. The numbers are linked to the Operational Command Centre.

The commissioner said once there is an emergency the person will get a WhatsApp message giving the  specific name and car number to get through roadblocks.
