THE fine for animal cruelty has been increased from $400 to $100,000 and a term of imprisonment of one year.
This according to Minister of Agriculture Clarence Rambharat who said the changes took effect from May 11, 2020 under the Summary Offences Act.
He made the statement on his Facebook page and on Thursday was praised by animal activist Nalini Dial.
She said, “This is good and I want to say that the MoA Clarence Rambharat did push this through especially after the hanging of the dog and the public outcry thereafter.
“However we activists did continue for the legislation to be speeded up. Don’t know why this amendment could not have been done so many years ago even from the previous Govt . Anyway I hope the courts will act accordingly to the act of cruelty.
“The problem now is for cases of animal cruelty to reach the courts.
“The unit that the CoP set up is still very impotent and not showing the kind of enthusiasm as we would have hoped.”
