10% of T&T Population To Be Vaccinated by August – Deyalsingh

TEN percent of the population should be vaccinated with 133,600 of Covid-19 jabs by August.

This according to Minister of Health Terrence Deyalsingh at the Covid-19 press conference hosted by Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley at the Diplomatic Centre on Saturday.

Deyalsingh said 134,000 doses of both the AstraZeneca and Sinopharm vaccines should be distributed by August 31, 2021.

To date, more than 60,000 persons have received the first dose of the AstraZeneca Vaccine and 1,179 fully vaccinated.

Deyalsingh said that second dose of AstraZeneca vaccines would start on June 6, 2021. WHO has recommended that the second jab should be administered between eight to 12 weeks after the first one.

First round of the Sinopharm vaccines started Friday, with 1926 persons receiving the vaccine. Of that number, 556 in the South Western Region, 255 in the North Western Region, 695 in the North Central Region, 310 in the Eastern Region and 120 in Tobago.

Deyalsingh said, “One thousand Sinopharm vaccines were allotted for the staff and patients of long-stay homes for the elderly, priority was given to staff to avoid the spread to the elderly patients at the home.”

The minister added that in some cases informed written consent was needed from the children and guardians of the elderly patients, and the homes were experiencing some delays in receiving the consent.

He said “The country is set to receive 16,000 vaccines from St Vincent and 8,000 from Bermuda.”

Deyalsingh said, “These vaccinations will be distributed to members of the Ministry of National Security, Works and Transport, Public Utilities, Education, Social Services and the Energy sector. The rollout will begin on Monday 24thMay, 2021, at the Tacarigua Racquet Centre,”
