The United States Justice Department has announced that it will investigate major online platforms to determine whether they are unfairly restricting competition.

Although the Department of Justice did not give any names, industry sources said companies under probe would include Amazon, Google, Facebook and Apple.

The Justice Department said it was initiated after “widespread concerns” about “search, social media and some retail services online.”

The DoJ has wide-ranging powers to investigate firms its suspects of breaching competition laws and can even break up companies it feels are too dominant.

The US Federal Trade Commission is already looking into similar concerns, while there are also investigations taking place in the European Union, the BBC reported.
