Tassa Drummer Dies After Fire At His Home

CLAXTON BAY – A-31-year-old tassa drummer who sustained burns during a fire at his home on Sunday morning has died.

Stephen Dwarika died at the San Fernando General Hospital after he sustained burns to 80 percent of his body.

He was rescued from his bedroom by his father Deoraj, 61, who had to break a glass door. Deoraj remains in intensive care and witnesses said in addition to burns he received cuts from broken glass.

Dwarika was barely conscious when he was pulled from his room.

Fire officers arrived on the scene on the fire which started around 2.30 a.m. and are yet to determine a cause of the fire.
