Abu Bakr is the political leader of the New National Vision (NNV) which was formed in 2010 and garnered about 3,000 votes in the last general elections when it contested 12 seats.

Some media outlets had reported on Thursday that Abu Bakr, whose father Yasin Abu Bakr led an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the Trinidad and Tobago government in 1990, was to be screened for the Port-of-Spain South seat for the PNM.

He was quoted in the online Express saying that he was to be screened for the PNM stronghold.

General elections are due this year.
